Minutes, [microform], 1941-1981.

The minutes of Local 153 include the Executive Board and General Section (or General Membership) minutes of its predecessor units, Locals 23076 and 20940 of the American Federation of Office Employees. The minutes become OPEIU Local 153 in 1946, and in 1966 OPEIU. The minutes include attendance sheets, detailed organizer reports by Howard Coughlin, reports on AFL conferences, correspondence, and special reports on union related business. The 1951 minutes include the "Proceedings of Examination of Estelle Lazarus, Ida Mandell, Barbara Litt, Nat Gross by the Exec. Bd. of OEIU 153" for alleged communist sympathies. Because of the nature of Local 153's jurisdiction there are frequent references in the organizer's reports as well as in the minutes themselves to many major New York City labor organizations. Local 153's substantial contributions to the unionization of private sector office and professional employees, notably in the fields of finance and insurance, make this collection of minutes central to any study of the history of office worker organization. Furthermore, its jurisdiction over the contracts governing employees of almost all of the city's unions supplements significantly our understanding of the internal mechanisms of the city's labor movement.
